Board chair’s statement on Felician Sisters’ decision to take Holy Name of Mary private
“On Thursday, May 31, we received written notice from the Felician Sisters of their intent to terminate the lease between themselves and the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board effective August 31, 2008, and open a private Catholic school on the site.
This comes as a complete surprise to us and we are saddened by the direction the Sisters have decided to take. However, we respect their decision. We cherish the 40 year tradition of excellence in Catholic education at Holy Name of Mary and the wonderful relationship we have had with the Sisters over this time.
We feel for the students and staff, for whom the school and the Sisters hold a special place in their hearts and appreciate that they are taking this news particularly hard.
We have not had an opportunity to discuss this as a board and to determine future options for our students and staff. We will be bringing this matter forward at our Administration and Finance Committee Meeting on Monday evening (June 4) and will have a better sense of our options at that time.”
