GRADE 11: COMPULSORY COURSES
Religious Education: Faith and Culture,
Grade 11 University/College (HRE3M)
This
course will fulfill the expectations of the Church in its desire that students
in Catholic schools develop an objective and respectful understanding of other
religious traditions from the perspective of the Catholic Church. To that end,
student learning will include an understanding of the Church’s teachings on
world religious traditions and those principles which inform ecumenical and
interreligious dialogue, together with an historical overview of the Church’s
relationship with various religions, particularly Judaism and Islam. For all
students, this course will help break down prejudice about other religions, and
for some they may lead to a deeper understanding and more authentic adherence
to the teachings of the Church concerning spiritual and moral truth. Other
religious traditions are encountered thought the unique perspective of the
Catholic Church.

This course builds on students’
previous education and language knowledge to introduce them to the English
language and help them adjust to the diversity in their new environment. Students will use beginning English language
skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing for everyday and essential
academic purposes. They will engage in short conversations using basic English language structures and simple sentence
patters; read short adapted texts; and write phrases and short sentences. The

This course extends students'

This course further extends

academic vocabulary and their study skills to facilitate their transition to
the mainstream school program. This course also introduces students to the
rights and responsibilities inherent in Canadian citizenship, and to a variety

This course prepares students to use English with increasing fluency and accuracy in classroom and social situations and to participate in Canadian society as informed citizens. Students will develop the oral-presentation, reading, and writing skills required for success in all school subjects. They will extend listening and speaking skills through participation in discussions and seminars; study and interpret a variety of grade-level texts; write narratives, articles, and summaries in English; and respond critically to a variety of print and media texts.

course introduces the mathematical concept of the function by extending
students' experiences with linear and quadratic relations. Students will

This
course helps students develop a personalized approach to healthy living.
Students will examine the factors that affect their own health and the health
of individuals as members of the community. They will learn about the
components of the Vitality approach
to healthy living – an initiative that promotes healthy eating, an active
lifestyle and a positive self-image. Throughout this course, students will
develop the skills necessary to take charge of and improve their own health, as
well as to encourage others to lead healthy lives. The focus of this course is
on weight training. This course is intended for those students who are serious

course develops students’ understanding of the basic concepts of physics.
Students will explore kinematics, with an emphasis on linear motion; different
kinds of forces; energy transformations; the properties of mechanical waves and
sound; and electricity and magnetism. They will enhance their scientific
investigation skills as they test laws of physics. In addition, they will analyse the interrelationships between physics and
technology, and consider the impact of technological applications of physics on
society and the environment.

This
course examines communications technology from a media perspective. Students
will develop knowledge and skills as they design and produce media projects in
the areas of live, recorded, and graphic communications. These areas may
include TV, video, and movie production; radio and audio production; print and
graphic communications; photography; digital imaging; broadcast journalism; and
interactive new media. Students will also develop an awareness of related
environmental and societal issues and explore college and university programs
and career opportunities in the various communications technology fields.

This
course examines computer systems and
control of external devices. Students will assemble computers and small
networks by installing and configuring appropriate hardware and software.
Students will develop knowledge and skills in electronics, robotics,
programming, and networks, and will build systems that use computer programs
and interfaces to control and/or respond to external devices. Students will
develop an awareness of environmental and societal issues related to the use of
computers, and will learn about college and university programs leading to
careers in computer engineering. There is an additional course fee for this

standards and codes, and explore postsecondary education programs and career
opportunities.

This
course enables students to develop knowledge and skills in cosmetology and
offers a variety of applications that will equip students to provide services
for a diverse clientele. Students identify trends in the hairstyling and
aesthetics industry, learn about related health and safety laws, and expand
their communication and interpersonal skills through interactions with peers
and clients. Students consider environmental and societal issues related to the
industry and acquire a more detailed knowledge of apprenticeships and
direct-entry work positions.
