Our Lady of Mercy School
Achieving, Believing & Caring
School Profile
Our mission is to provide a Catholic education which develops the spiritual, intellectual and physical capabilities of each individual to live fully today and to meet the challenges of tomorrow, thus enriching the community.
Our Lady of Mercy Elementary School is an elementary school of approximately 500 students, of diverse social and ethnic backgrounds, from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8. Our school population reflects the diverse socio-economic mix found within Mississauga. The surrounding community consists of single family dwellings, town homes, and high rise apartments. Our school is equipped with a double gym, a stage, a library, and a welcoming foyer at the entrance of our school. A new addition was added in 2004 to the school, providing six new classrooms, two seminar rooms and storage space. We also have a computer lab consisting of 32 computers and have additional computers in every classroom.
Our school motto; “Achieving, Believing and Caring,” reflects our goal in working together with parents, the parish and the community to provide a safe, caring and inclusive environment.
As a learning community we are focused on achieving higher levels of literacy and numeracy skills. Our goal is to enable our students to become fluent readers and writers who can problem solve, communicate effectively and make informed decisions. Our Lady of Mercy School follows the Ontario Curriculum, and provides a variety of learning opportunities that are relevant to the needs, skills and aspirations of our students. Programs and resources are adapted to meet the needs of all learners including those with specific learning difficulties or needs. Appropriate assessment and evaluation procedures are planned and implemented to motivate and encourage student success.
As a faith community, we embrace the gospel values and Virtues program in our daily life at school and welcome the support of our Catholic community in enriching our Catholic values and traditions. Our partnership with Merciful Redeemer Parish provides a strong faith life for our school community and supports many of our faith related activities including daily prayer, dedication to the rosary, liturgical celebrations, the sacraments, retreats and community service. We encourage student leadership and community support of our Catholic charities such as Share Life, St. Vincent de Paul Society and Eden Food Bank. We also participate in a number of fund raising for other agencies that link with our families such as the Canadian Breast Cancer Society, the Juvenile Diabetes Association and the Children's Wish Foundation.
As a caring community Our Lady of Mercy School stresses safe play, respect and acceptance of others, responsible citizenship and respect for our environment. We follow the Board’s Catholic Code of Behaviour which provides specific guidelines for student conduct and appropriate disciplinary action.
As a Catholic school community we also follow the Board's Virtues program, embedding this throughout the faith life of our school.
We strive to work in partnership with our parents and community to provide a rich and positive school experience for all of our students.
