Remembering the Past – Embracing the Future

Celebrating a Century of Catholic Education

Jack Dolganiuk, a former student of Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board was commissioned to create a commemorative mural to celebrate the story of St. Patrick School, which pays honour and homage to our history, while also embracing the future.

The mural begins with a depiction of Saint Patrick, Bishop of Ireland.  St. Patrick can be observed viewing the entire mural.  As a school community we gain strength and wisdom from our patron saint.  A visual of both the one room school house and St. Patrick Church can be observed in the mural, a reminder to us all that Catholic Schools exist in partnership with the Catholic Church.  Beside these two buildings stands a student and two Loretto Sisters.  This picture reminds us that teaching is indeed a vocation and we owe much to the priests and nuns and laity of the past that committed themselves to Catholic Education.  We exist today as a result of the sacrifices of many in the past.

While the mural embraces the past, it also looks to the future.  The Eucharist is central to our Faith community and the Sacramental Life we are called to as Catholics.  A number of the Sacraments are visibly respresented in the mural.  Academic exellence and faith formation are seamlessly inter-woven throughout the mural.

The depiction of a variety of cultures, as priests, staff and students helps us to understand that we are a global church and a community of faith that is continually evolving.  Traditionally settled by an Irish community, and then later by a community from Italian decent, St. Patrick School is now home to some 34 different cultures.

The mural resides in the libary at St. Patrick School.
