Energy Conservation Review completed November 19, 2010

Results: over 80% of lights are turned off when not required

            48% of computer monitors are left on when not in use

            68% of classes did not have space around vents/windows/window sills free of obstructions

 

Action Plan:

     ‘Last Out Lights Out’ PA announcements and reminder magnet strips placed on each door frame

     ‘After You Log Out…Put Me to Sleep’ bulletin board in computer lab and PA announcements about putting computers to sleep

 

Follow Up Review completed April 11, 2011

Results:  91% of lights are turned off when not required

                  46% of classes did not have space around vents/windows/window sills free of obstructions

 

Waste Minimization Review completed November 19, 2010

Results: 26% of classrooms have a re-use box for partially-used paper

            90% of classrooms have a paper recycling system

            60% of classrooms have a container recycling system

Action Plan:

     Expand recycling program to include pizza boxes and tetra packages

     Collect GOOS (Good On One Side) paper and distribute to classrooms for use in re-use boxes.

     Recycle Printer cartridges and Photocopier toner bottles

     Eliminate banner page on computer print outs to Xerox photocopier

Follow Up Review completed April 11, 2011

Results: 75% of classrooms have a re-use box for partially-used paper

            88% of classrooms have a paper recycling system

            76% of classrooms have a container recycling system

               79.5kg of pizza boxes were directed to recycling

             175 tetra packs collected for recycling

 

Waste Audit completed January 7, 2011

Results: Amount of garbage generated by students 56.5 kg/student/year

Amount of recycling generated by students 31.5 kg/student/year

Percentage of waste diverted from landfill sites 35%

 

Action Plan: Review acceptable items for recycling.

 

 

Other Initiatives 

 

Bottled Water Free Day-March 11, 2011

To promote the use of reusable water bottles and the use of our municipal water supply instead of single use water bottles that are purchased.Water bottle use is being tracked each week with the class having the best overall average winning a movie and popcorn party. The overall trend of water bottle usage was an increase to a high of 112 bottles. 

 

Reduce, Reuse, Send Project

An Intermediate Division initiative that promotes environmental stewardship and social awareness. Milk bags are crocheted into sleeping mats and are sent to developing countries.  One mat has been completed and the girls continue to make yarn out of the milk bags collected.

 

Earth Hour-March 26, 2011

A global campaign to slow climate change. We will be saving energy at school by turning off all unnecessary light and electrical devices for one hour. Community participation was GREAT!!  Over 100 families signed their pledge cards and returned them to school.  Way to go St. Peter School community!!
