JUNIOR BOYS FOOTBALL 2007

The junior Pirates season was not as successful in the standings as we would have hoped, but coaches Radic and Sikic feel that the success of the team can be measured in other ways.  This years junior team was represented by 43 grade nine and ten boys that showed heart, determination and effort day in and day out for 3 months.  Only 12 players returned from last years team, so this years edition of the Pirates was young and raw.  The team was led by veterans Sean Regino, Troy Black, Arthur Miskiewicz and Jesse Kehoe.  These four were the focal point of the team, bringing helpful game experience to a mainly rookie team.  Joining them were first year players Joseph Raya, Cesar Cineceros,  Kris Baily, Mark Nesterowich, Nethaa Sinnathamby and Ahmed Elfecky to give Pocock a strong front on both sides of the ball.  Also Pocock’s future at Quarterback looks extremely bright with the play of two freshman QB’s in Steven Arbuthnot and Joseph Cannataro.  Highlights of the year include back to back wins versus Father Goetz and Applewood, and real tight games against perennial Jr. football giants Lorne Park and Mount Carmel as well as eventual champs St. Francis Xavier.  Coaches Radic and Sikic would like to thank all the boys for their dedication and hope to take this year’s valuable experience into a success 2008.  They would also like to thank Paul Kupicz for all his help this season.

 SR. BOYS FOOTBALL 2007

The Senior Football team entered the season with high expectations and they did not disappoint.  Starting with three straight victories versus St. Edmund Campion (24-14), St Marcellinus (22-13) and St. Josephs (35-7) the Pirates enjoyed GTA recognition for the first time in over a decade by being ranked 7th in the Toronto Star High School Football Poll.  After dropping their next game, the Pirates rebounded with wins over Gonzaga (45-13) and Lorne Park (13-7) to finish the season with 5 wins and one loss, and a 10th ranking in the same GTA poll.

Highlights of the year include defending the 2nd annual Red and Black Bowl trophy by defeating St. Marcellinus in the “Friday Night Lights” game with over 400 Pirates family and friends attending to cheer on our boys and our QB Sheldon Moore receiving Athlete of the Week honours on City TV for his strong play in the win over Lorne Park.  Sheldon had a great season with 11 throwing touch downs as well as 6 touchdowns on the ground.  His brother Aaron was the recipient of many of those touchdowns racking up a total of _ for the season.  Other standouts for the Pirates were Ante Kovacevic, arguably the best Tight End in the league scoring 4 TD’s for the season ans scrappy running back Jason Walker tallying 5 TD’s on the season.  Other standouts for the Pirates was the play of Kurtis Robinson, Roman and Yurij Marcyshyn, Marco Ciprietti, John Roberto and Andrew Feshnets.  Steven Figiola also added to the mix by consistently producing points by kicking 8 field goals.

The season ended prematurely for the Pirates but in dramatic fashion.  Down 16 points in the quarter-finals with four minutes left, Sheldon Moore, fighting strep throat, led his troops to an amazing 4th quarter comeback to send the game into overtime.  Down again in overtime, the Pirates came back to force a second overtime but eventually ran out of steam ending their dreams of a championship run.  The coaching staff is very proud of the way the boys fought back in an amazing fashion and were heartbroken that the comeback could not be completed.  It shows how just in life, sports can create highs and lows, and the boys should be proud of the things they accomplished this season.  Mr. Sikic would like to thank his players and fellow coaches, Mr. Radic, Mr. Michael Sesek, and Mr. Jim Soultanidis for all their time and energy this season.  He would also like to thank Ms. Finelli, Mr. Policelli, Mr. S.Fletcher, and Mr. Renz for all their help this season.

Football is a sport that expects a lot of personal time and dedication.  We practice everyday for 2 hours for up to 3 months.  This year, Pocock football for the first time has honoured some of their athletes for their 4 or 5 years of service.
