School Library Staff
Pocock’s School Library Information Centre has three full-time staff:
- Teacher-Librarian
- Library Technician
- Library Secretary
Working as a team, and in collaboration with the rest of the Pocock staff, the members of the School Library staff work to create a School Library Information Centre that welcomes and supports all members of the Pocock community.
Teacher-Librarian
In Ontario, Teacher-Librarians are fully qualified, certified teachers with additional qualifications in School Librarianship. To qualify for the Specialist course, a teacher must have teaching experience, including experience in a School Library, so Teacher-Librarians are generally veteran teachers, with several years of classroom experience.
Teacher-Librarians are expected to be:
- leaders;
- information management experts;
- collaborative program planners and teachers;
- managers.
For more information, read the Ontario School Library Association’s Position Statement on the Role of the Teacher-Librarian and Students' Information Literacy Needs in the 21st Century: Competencies for Teacher-Librarians, from the Canadian Association for School Libraries.
Library Technician
Library Technicians complete a two-year college diploma in a Library and Information Technician’s program. Library Technicians provide the technical support necessary to maintain library functions. For example, Library Technicians catalogue library materials, help develop and maintain the library collection, help library users find and use information, and help provide computer support in the library.
Library Secretary
Library Secretaries must have at least a high school diploma and must pass tests of secretarial skills. Library secretaries provide the clerical support necessary to maintain library functions. For example, Library Secretaries provide circulation services, prepare overdue notices, and maintain budget records.
