Understanding English language learners and how they can be supported in the classroom and beyond present challenges to both classroom teachers and new ESL teachers. This session will provide an introduction to ESL programming and how educators can work together to assist ELLs from reception and orientation to working in the classroom. Topics of discussion will include: differentiated instruction strategies, adapting mainstream curriculum including modifications and accommodations, monitoring and recording student progress, and assessment and evaluation strategies. As well, an overview of the Ministry resources will be provided. You will leave with new learning, new relationships, and a renewed confidence in supporting this group of unique and diverse learners.

This session will explore dozens of practical ways to develop active listening skills and listening comprehension skills. As a result, students will begin speaking more and with increased confidence. The activities highlighted in this session are highly motivating, fun and rewarding, both for students and teachers. You will participate in many “ready-to-use” activities and games. You will also create new ones with easy-to-use templates. Finally you will have the opportunity to “test-drive” and share with all participants. Each participant will leave with variations on different activities. We will extend some of the listening and speaking activities to reading and writing, and integrate the use of internet. We will also develop templates for a wide variety of assessment and evaluation tools.

We will address the importance of the gesture approach, balanced literacy, math, science and environmental studies, the arts, physical education, religion and family life. The grade two French Immersion student comes with communication skills, reading comprehension strategies and writing skills in French. An introduction to and demonstration of balanced literacy will be provided, along with hands-on opportunities to experience programming in math, science, social studies, the arts, physical education, religion and family life. You will leave the session with a road map complete with exemplars.

In this session, we will go through the program guide, the gestures for the first day and classroom set up and management. We will examine sample lessons, activities. You will begin the new school year with the necessary tools to teach the A.I.M. program and feel successful.
