Elementary

Problem solving is an integral part of the three-part lesson format. This session will provide teachers with a fun-filled firsthand experience at teaching math concepts using the four stages in the inquiry process (Polya-UMCL). Participants will become familiar with strategies and tools that will assist their students in becoming independent problem solvers. In the spirit of differentiated instruction, teachers will learn about providing students with contextual problems that will entice students to take risks no matter their entry level.  Participants will be given the opportunity to explore the potential of a variety of manipulatives and how to incorporate them into their students’ tool selection. Throughout the session, teachers will experience and learn how to create a classroom environment that encourages students to explore, take risks, question, communicate and celebrate their mathematical thinking.

SMARTBoards have definitely had a positive impact in the classroom over the last decade.  Teachers have been given the opportunity to now create and share lessons with colleagues of all different grade levels.  Enhancing the communication between teachers is ever-increasing and the SMARTBoard is the tool of choice to facilitate this communication.  The goal of this session is to familiarize new users with some of the capabilities of SMARTBoard technology in assisting with their mathematic program.  Teachers will be provided with the opportunity to explore the SMARTBoard resources to better facilitate them with lesson creation.

PRIME looks at the developmental sequence of childrens’ understanding of mathematics in numbers and operations.  You will learn to assess the developmental stages of a student, how to adapt instruction to the needs of the students in your classroom and how to help them progress in their understandings of mathematics. Every participant will receive a kit which includes assessment and instruction tools as well as charts of the developmental stages.  Teachers will need to be able to have access to at least one child between the ages of 6 and 12 between the second and third session to be able to practice the assessment.  Program Department will cover the cost for additional resources provided for this session.

We have all heard words like: processes, strategies, differentiated instruction, the problem solving model (UMCL), tools, big ideas, bansho, math congress, math talk.   Now you’re wondering. what is the role of each of these in a three-part lesson?  This session will look at the three-part lesson from the ground up.  According to the Dufferin Peel Catholic Board Learning Plan, the expected practice in math by 2013, is that all lessons be taught using a three-part lesson format.  So why not get started today.  Together we will look at the components needed to successfully plan a three-part lesson for your students.  The session is open to all teachers that have heard the “buzz” and want to get started in their own classrooms. Bring your questions, concerns and your math curriculum document.
