This session will discuss ADHD as a learning disorder that requires specific remediation and training in cognitive strategies. These interventions have been shown to reduce the behaviour problems often seen in students with this diagnosis. A review of diagnostic criteria, symptoms, the role of Executive Function, recent research and classroom interventions will be covered in this session.

Elementary
Clicker 5 is now available as standard suite in all of our elementary schools. Come and learn how this dynamic literacy and multimedia tool can help you develop exciting and interactive curriculum activities across the grade levels and across the curriculum. We will start the day with a basic introduction to Clicker 5 followed by an afternoon of application to curriculum. This will be a hands-on session. At the end of the day, we will share electronic resources and activities to take back to your classroom. Please note you will be using a MAC for this session.

Elementary and Secondary Special Education
Kurzweil 3000 text-to-speech software is designed to support the literacy needs of many LD students allowing for greater independence in accessing curriculum. This session will allow participants to learn the many features of Kurzweil including advanced scanning and editing techniques. Writing support including word prediction will also be explored. Finally, we will investigate study skill tools, test-taking and the creation of mp3 audio files. This session is suitable for BOTH PC and MAC users. Please note you will be using an IBM for this session.

Co:Writer (word prediction) and Write:Outloud (talking word processor) SOLO are Ministry licensed pieces of software which are now available as standard suite in all of our elementary schools. Come and learn how these quality tools can ensure that all students are successfully expressing new learning through writing. Both of these tools will be explored and their application will be linked to curriculum expectations. Please note you will be using a MAC for this session.

This session is intended to provide teachers with important information regarding the NEW Ministry of Education initiatives (Policy/Program Memorandum 140) for students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Come learn about: a) the power of reinforcement; b) assessing behaviour/skills and designing practical intervention plans; c) proactive strategies such as visual and structural supports, instructional tips and social engagement; d) how to build independence in order to enhance quality of life for students with ASD.

This session will begin by discussing the three types of non-academic barriers to learning: individual barriers such as mental health issues, learning disabilities and chronic illnesses; family-based barriers such as family dysfunction, unemployment and poverty; and community-based barriers such as violence, lack of support resources and substandard housing. We will discuss how these barriers affect academic achievement and what can be done by schools to prevent or reduce them. We will present a new model of support for dealing with student barriers through collaboration with the school’s multidisciplinary team. The session will conclude with strategies for managing challenging behaviours in students.

No time to create visual supports for your student with ASD? Can’t find a laminator and velcro to quickly put together materials? Participants who attend this session will be provided with an overview of practical, evidence based visual strategies to support their students. Participants will be assigned to small groups to create visual supports that they can take with them. In addition, we will provide information on how the visual supports can be used effectively, and will troubleshoot questions from participants.
