St. Ursula - Patron Saint

It is unknown which century Ursula lived in or when she was martyred.

During the 4th century, a senator by the name of Clematius reconstructed a church in Cologne as a memorial to Christian martyrs.  An ancient plaque in the church explains that the church marks the location of the martyrdom of a number of maidens.  From these vague details, the legend of St. Ursula was formed.

The legend says that Ursula was the daughter of a Christian King from Britain.  To avoid marrying a pagan prince, Ursula embarked on a pilgrimage to Rome along with ten companions, each attended by a thousand maidens.  On their way back from Rome, Ursula led the group to Cologne where the city was occupied by Huns.  The leader of the Huns intended to take Ursula as his wife.  When she firmly refused, Ursula and the other maidens were killed.

Ursula is the patron saint of young women, teachers, Catholic Education and school children.

Her feast day is celebrated on October 21st.
