St. Vincent de Paul School was built in 1983, opening up in 1984, soon after its neigbouring elementary school, St. Basil.
While once a much larger school with many portables, the school has experienced a decline in population over the years and now stands at approximately 280 students.
The school was sided by a Dufferin Peel Secondary School, initially Philip Pocock Secondary School. Today John Cabot Secondary School stands beside St. Vincent de Paul School. During the building of John Cabot, the outside area surrounding the school received some renovations including the revamping of the yard, driveway and parking areas.
St. Vincent de Paul School is comprised of students from Junior Kindergarten through Grade Eight. The community consists of a combination of single family dwellings, apartment buildings and townhouses, situated in the heart of Mississauga.
The community is reflective of many diverse social and ethnic backgrounds.
During the summer of 2007, the school has received some further renovations, which have included the following:
- upgrading the lighting in the upstairs and downstairs hallways, washrooms,
and office area
- replacement of the boiler for more cost-efficient heating
- upgrading of the student washrooms, including new stalls, sinks and painting
- air conditioning has been added in the office and staffroom area (previously
placed in the library in the summer of 2006)
- all exterior doors have been repainted
- the gymnasium has also been slated for an upgrade in lighting
These upgrades are a welcome addition to the school as it moves toward recognizing its twenty-fifth anniversary.
