Schools and parishes across Dufferin-Peel to celebrate Catholic Education Week April 30 – May 5

Schools and parishes across the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board will host many special events and activities during the week of April 30 – May 5, as students, staff, and the community celebrate Catholic Education Week.

This year's theme for Catholic Education Week is Walking Forward Together. Many schools will host events and activities reflective of this theme, including: plays, art displays, celebratory Masses, fundraisers, motivational speakers, and much more.

"This is a very special week for our staff and students. It is an opportunity to reflect on the importance of faith in our lives, and the role it plays in education," said Marianne Mazzorato, director of education. "We invite all members of our community, especially our parents and guardians, to participate in the events and activities planned for their school communities throughout the week."

As one of the features of its Catholic Education Week celebration, Dufferin-Peel will run a social media campaign on Twitter called #MyCatholicEducation from April 24 to May 5. Students, staff, parents and alumni are asked to reflect on "What does Catholic education mean to you?" or "How has your Catholic education helped to shape the person you are today?" and share their thoughts through tweets and pictures using the hashtag #MyCatholicEducation.

Dufferin-Peel will also launch "Just Dance for Catholic Education". Schools are invited to dance to the Catholic Education week theme song, "Walking Forward Together", written by Nancy Bodsworth, teacher at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Secondary School. A dance video was produced by St. Roch Catholic Secondary School in partnership with St. Angela Merici Elementary School as part of this initiative.

Students will also be participating in province-wide initiatives such as the Ontario Catholic Student Trustees Association's Catholic Education Week video featuring student reflections on what Catholic education means to them, as well as the Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace's Mustard Seed Challenge, which educates students about the need to support small-scale family farming around the world as a solution to both hunger and climate change.
