Important Information about Wearing a Halloween Costume at Ascension
Halloween is an annual fun event celebrated across the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board. In an effort to create safe, caring, and inclusive spaces within our schools, please consider the impact your costume choice may have on others, especially if it is offensive to someone's religion, culture, gender, gender expression, ability, heritage, or sexual orientation.
Before choosing a costume to wear to school, consider the following questions:
- Does my costume, mock or condescend historically oppressed people and or cultures?
- Does my costume include painting one's face to match the skin colour of a specific person/people?
- Does my costume incorporate sanctified objects/clothing of other's cultures?
- Does my costume caricaturize marginalized groups or person (historical or current) in a way that may serve to trivialize them?
