Guidance / Courses

Welcome to the Guidance Department

At St. Marguerite d'Youville Catholic Secondary School, our Guidance program provides students with an understanding of the concepts in the three areas of learning: personal, interpersonal, and pathway planning.  As students gain an understanding of concepts related to lifelong learning, interpersonal relationships, and career/education planning, they will also develop the skills of an Ontario Catholic School Graduate including: socially responsible citizenship, effective communication, and the ability to formulate and pursue educational and career goals (self-directed learning).

Academic and Personal counseling are important roles of the Guidance Department. We provide instruction in Guidance and Career Education through credit courses and individual counseling. Working collaboratively with students, we guide them towards graduation and a successful transition to their initial post-secondary destination including: apprenticeship, college, university and/or the workplace.

Parents/Guardians are encouraged to get involved with their child’s learning and we invite them to contact the Guidance Department with any concerns regarding their child.

Settlement Workers in Schools (SWIS)

The Settlement Workers in Schools (SWIS) Program is designed to provide consistent service delivery for newcomer families through local schools. Partnerships with Boards of Education deliver settlement services for newcomers at local schools in Brampton and Mississauga. The main objective of the program is to assist newcomer families to integrate into their school and community by providing information, settlement services, and referral to community agencies from their local school.

Settlement workers in schools proactively contact newcomer students and their families to connect them to programs and services available to them in the community. Information sessions in schools, often offered in partnership with school staff, are specifically designed to introduce newcomer students to the education system in Canada and to support families in the settlement process. Our settlement workers in schools work simultaneously with newcomer students, their parents, and school staff to ensure that there is a support system in place for successful learning experience. Our Settlement Worker is Boshrah Fanous  x79301.
