The 10 FOR 10 Reading Program has been in place at the Fr. Michael Goetz Library Learning Commons since September of 2009. The program was designed as an initiative to encourage students to sign out books and develop a lifelong interest in reading. The Library staff is frequently asked about the program. What follows is a list of the more popular questions and answers. Please drop by the library if we have missed any of your questions, and we would be happy to answer them.
Q. What does 10 FOR 10 stand for?
A. It stands for 10 books in 10 months.
Q. What is it all about?
A. The name refers to the list of students who reach the goal of signing out 10 books in 10 months, which we think is a reasonable goal and a valuable one for all of our students from grade 9 through 12.
Q. What do you mean by “list of students”?
A. The FMG Library Learning Commons tracks all students who sign out at least one book during the academic year. Staff keeps a written record of the books they have signed out, up to a maximum of 10 books in one year. When students reach the number 10, the teacher librarian sends a note to them informing them that their name will be engraved, under their particular grade level, on the plaque for that year. The plaque will be displayed in the library in September of the following year and will be later affixed to the wall. Plus, upon completion of the 10 books within the school year, the student's name is entered into the monthly 10 for 10 draw for a chance to win a $30.00 gift card at Indigo. (Photos above are those of student monthly winners to date for the 2018-19 school year).
Q. How do you keep track of the students and the books they have read?
A. The library staff could use the circulation records, but prefers to have the student complete a slip of paper which they receive when they sign out a book. The slip has a check off area indicating whether they have read parts of the book or the complete book. Sometimes students check out books that they think will be interesting but discover after reading the first chapter or so that the book doesn’t appeal to them. The student will gets credit for that book because the focus is on signing out the books.
Q. Do all resources in the library count toward the 10 book sign out goal?
A. The only resources which are excluded are magazines. Graphic books, novels or nonfiction books count toward the student’s total number.
Q. When do you stop tracking the books on the student’s record sheet?
A. The library staff stops tracking after 10 books.
Q. Is the program working? Are more students signing out books?
A. The results have been very encouraging. The number of student names engraved on the plaque increased by 50% in the year 2013, and we hope to see this figure continue to grow.
Q. What advice would you give to students who might want to set this goal for themselves?
A. Students should be open to all kinds of books in the library, including teen fiction, Canadian fiction, best selling fiction and the very popular graphic books. Students may use the eLibrary Catalogue to access a list of new fiction. Truly, there is something for everybody in the FMG Library Learning Commons.
