The St. John XXIII Houseleague Sports Program has been in existence for some 30 years.  It involves students from grades 3 to 8 in two divisions: Division 1 grades 3 - 5 and Division 2 grades 6 - 8.  At the beginning of each school year, the grade 3 teachers place their students on one of our four houseleague teams: Warriors, Rams, Panthers and Eagles. Students are placed on a team keeping in mind gender as well as abilities and skill levels thus ensuring, as best as possible, an equal opportunity for success in games.  Students remain on their houseleague team for the duration of their stay at St.John XXIII School.  On occasion trades are made to equalize teams for a variety of reasons.

At the beginning of the school year, elections to determine a president and vice president for each houseleague team are conducted.  The elected members along with the teacher in charge (league commissioner) form the Houseleague Executive.  Each elected official is responsible for the setting up and putting away of equipment as well as ensuring equal opportunity to play for each team member.  Executive meetings are held from time to time to discuss various matters concerning the league.

Traditionally, boys have played against boys and girls against girls, however with a smaller number of students in more recent years, we have successfully incorporated co-ed competition.

The scoring system is a combination of points allotted for wins (5 points), ties (4 points) and losses (3 points) plus the number of students that participated that day for each respective team for an overall point total.  Thus the emphasis on accumulating points rests on participation much more so than the actual outcome of the game itself.  At the end of the year, the team with the highest overall point total gets their team name engraved on the Houseleague trophy.  Houseleague games are played during the noon hour and participation is optional.

Aims of the Houseleague Program

1) To encourage the development of co-operation and competition; two opposing yet complementary terms.
2) To develop leadership skills.
3) To promote positive self image, fair play, sportspersonship, honesty and respect for others.
4) To create an environment in which children are motivated by a common purpose which is to participate in and enjoy athletic activities.
5) To encourage maximum participation.
6) To promote inclusive participation regardless of skill level.
