ST. MICHAEL CATHOLIC SECONDARY SCHOOL
December 10, 2021
Dear Parent/ Guardian,
As many of you are aware, your Grade 10 child is required to write the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) this year. The OSSLT measures whether students are meeting the standards for literacy up to the end of Grade 9. Successful completion of the test is required in order for your child to graduate with an Ontario Secondary School Diploma.
This year's OSSLT, commonly known as the Literacy Test, will be administered during Semester 2, between March and May. The test will be administered in an online format. The individual student results will be reported by the end of June 2022.
As part of the school's initiative to work towards student success, the Literacy Committee has various strategies in place to help students practice and prepare for the Literacy Test. One of these includes the opportunity for your child to attend after-school remediation classes.
If you feel your child needs extra help, our school will be running a round of virtual after-school remediation classes beginning the week of January 10, which will run until the week of February 9.
Academic resource after-school remediation classes will also be running during these sessions. Please fill out the form attachment found below and have your child return it to the front office by December 17 2021.
Here are the following dates of the classes, which will be held virtually:
Monday & Wednesday January 10 & 12 ***each class is from 3:00-4:00pm
Monday & Wednesday, January 17 & 19
Monday & Wednesday, January 24 & 26
Monday & Wednesday, January 31 & February 2
Monday & Wednesday, February 7 & 9 *last class
These after-school classes will be taught by one of our teachers and they will teach and reinforce important skills, tips, and criteria that your child will need to be successful on the test. The classes are approximately 1 hour in length, and occur twice weekly for five weeks.
Even though all grade 9 and 10 courses will have OSSLT instruction, as a school we have found that students are able to achieve better OSSLT results and attain a high degree of confidence in their literacy abilities overall through attending these after-school classes.
In addition, the practice test is available through the QR code below:

We are confident by working together, your child will be successful.
Sincerely,
The St. Michael Literacy Committee
