School History

Historical Perspective

In the 1950's with growth in Brampton the need for a separate school was perceived. A committee, which became the first Board, was formed in 1953 to investigate the establishment of a separate school.  Land was purchased for St. Mary School in 1954.  Two years of negotiation were required with town officials to establish the basis of tax support for the school.  It was 1957 before St. Mary School could proceed.

By March of 1957, tenders were submitted for the building of a six-room school and approval was given to begin construction of what became St. Mary Catholic School.  Unforeseen delays in construction dictated that St. Mary students would begin the 1957-1958 school year in facilities leased from Bell telephone on John Street.  The 150 students moved into the building in October 1957.

By October 1958, a four-room addition was completed, making St. Mary Catholic School a relatively modern facility as schools went, with the inclusion of the parish hall as the gymnasium. Of interest:  When St. Mary Catholic School opened in 1957, the bus children were charged 10 cents per ride to help defray the costs.  All students who attended St. Mary School in the early years wore school uniforms.  Since then a number of renovations have occurred, specifically from 1958-1965.  In 2002, additional renovations occurred, all of the classrooms and hallways were updated as well as the purchasing of the St. Mary Parish Hall.  Since 2002 we became the proud owners of our own gymnasium.   Most recently we are exceptionally proud of our outdoor facilities; regarded upper playground, peace garden, "Our Pathway to Jesus through Mary", stain glass panels, outdoor stairs, boulder enclosures at the front of the school.  In addition, we blessed with our location and close proximity to the Mother Parish in Brampton, St. Mary's Parish.

Our long-standing roots in the community highlighted our celebration of 50 years of excellence in Catholic Education in May, 2008.  Our strong ties to the church make us the model for parish, home, school true community relationships.
