Workshop: The University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM) is committed to inclusion and providing access to Black students in their pursuit of a post-secondary education. As an institution, we are dedicated to dismantling barriers that hold anyone from reaching their full potential; as well, we strive to provide all students with equal and equitable opportunities to ensure they thrive at UTM.  BAEE Flyer.pdf

Learning Objectives: The Black Access to Educational Excellence Initiative provides prospective Black high school students with supports at UTM to assist them in their university decision-making process. Prospective Black students will be personally introduced to current UTM Black students, faculty, and a robust network of resources, dedicated to continually supporting them throughout their post-secondary studies.

Community Involvement

Community Involvement Graduation Requirement:

For the 2020-21 school year, the ministry has revised the 40 hour community service requirement to 20 hours to recognize the impact of Covid in the lives of our students. The Ministry is providing increased flexibility in how all secondary students can earn hours:

1. At the principal’s direction, schools may waive the restrictions that do not allow students to earn hours during the time allotted for the instructional program on a school day, or duties normally performed in the home (e.g. walking a younger child to and from school, helping younger siblings with school work).

2. Students aged 14 years and older can count up to a maximum of 10 hours from paid employment towards their earned hours at the discretion of the principal. Students counting paid employment towards their graduation requirement will be required to complete a reflection exercise indicating how their work contributed to the service of others.

3. Volunteer opportunities, such as connecting young people to be technology mentors to seniors, can be found through such agencies as Spark Ontario.
