Arts and Culture

Arts and Culture SHSM is a unique opportunity for students who are passionate about music.

The 5 requirements of Arts and Culture SHSM are:

8 CREDIT BUNDLE: 

     Grade 11          Grade 12
 4 MAJOR CREDITS
 1 Gr. 11 OR 12 English Credit
 1 Gr. 11 OR 12  Business Studies OR Canadian and World Studies Credit
 2-4 Credit Co-op Placement

CERTIFICATIONS:

Students are required to train in 6 certifications:

3 Compulsory:
First Aid, CPR, WHMIS

 3 Elective:
• Training in a technique (conducting, musical  theatre, opera, African Drumming)
• Music Therapy
• Certification in Careers in the Entertainment Industry
• Lighting and Sound Equipment
• Arranging and Recording Software
• Instrument Repair

EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING:
These planned learning activities take place outside of the traditional classroom to enable SHSM students to find out about opportunities and careers available to them (a day long observation of a person working in the industry, attending a college or university music class, touring theatres and studios, participating in workshops, attending conferences)

“REACH AHEAD” ACTIVITIES:

- Apprenticeship: visiting agencies in the sector
- College: interviewing a college student in the sector
- University: observing a master class
- Workplace: helping a musician prepare for a show
- All Pathways: volunteer at a community concert

ONTARIO SKILLS PASSPORT:

Students use the OSP to assess, build, document and track their skills and transfer them to further their education, training, the workplace and everyday life.
