Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board announces its Top Ontario Scholars for 2018-19

3,556 Grade 12 Dufferin-Peel students scored 80 per cent or higher

The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board's (DPCDSB) top Ontario Scholar for the 2018-19 school year is Jose Navarro from St. Francis Xavier Secondary School in Mississauga. Jose scored a near perfect average of 99.33%. He will attend Western University in the fall, where he has enrolled in the Medical Sciences program.

DPCDSB's top Ontario Scholar from a Brampton school is Jenny Chau from Notre Dame Catholic Secondary School with an average of 99.17%. Jenny is enrolled in the Integrated Science program at McMaster University.

Jennifer Ryu from Robert F. Hall Catholic Secondary School is the top Ontario Scholar in the Bolton/Caledon/Orangeville area with a 97.00% average. Jennifer will be studying Health Sciences at McMaster University.

"Congratulations to Jose, Jenny and Jennifer for their remarkable achievements," said Marianne Mazzorato, Director of Education. "It takes tremendous dedication, focus and commitment on the part of these students to achieve this level of academic success. It is also a reflection of their teachers, parents and guardians who inspired and encouraged them to reach for the top."

To be an Ontario Scholar, students must achieve an average of 80% or higher on their top six Grade 12 courses. This year, 3,556 DPCDSB graduates earned this distinction.

"This year, we celebrated our 7,441 graduates who have fulfilled the Ontario Catholic School Graduate Expectations and are ready to take on a new journey outside the familiar walls of their schools," added Marianne Mazzorato. "We are extremely proud of each and every one of them and wish them success and God's richest blessing as they move on to the next chapter in their lives."

The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board is one of largest and most diverse school districts in Ontario, with approximately 81,000 students in 151 Catholic schools throughout Mississauga, Brampton, Caledon and Orangeville. With over 11,000 employees, the board is also one of the largest employers in the region.
