Dufferin-Peel Catholic students showcase their technological skills in local competition

The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board's 2019 Secondary Catholic Skills Competition will be held on March 19 at Philip Pocock Catholic Secondary School in Mississauga, with St. Martin Secondary School hosting all the Secondary Culinary and Hospitality events. The Elementary Catholic Skills Competition will be held on March 26 at Father Daniel Zanon Elementary School in Mississauga.

On each of these days, DPCDSB students will have the opportunity to showcase their skills in this multi-trade and technology competition, which serves as a qualification round for the Skills Canada Provincial Competition.

Approximately 400 students will compete in over 40 trade and technological areas, including: robotics, workplace safety, 3D character animation, baking, carpentry, hairstyling, and television and video production.

Representatives from local businesses and colleges will judge the competition, and the top students will qualify to move on to the provincial finals being held at the Toronto Congress Centre on May 6-8, 2019.

The Catholic Skills Competition provides experiential learning opportunities, builds awareness in Technological Education and provides opportunities to explore careers in various trade sectors. Students showcase their God-given gifts and talents while developing their knowledge, technical and essential skills in their chosen sector competition as individuals or in teams. These events promote positive school engagement and build community partnerships through mentorship.

Secondary students who are successful at the provincial competition will advance to the Skills Canada National Competition, where they will have the opportunity to compete against students from across Canada.
