English as a Second Language (ESL)

This program is a communicative approach to English as a second language learning, providing learners with an understanding, not only of the language, but also the Canadian culture. The instruction is based on a thematic and communicative approach to developing language used in daily life and job related situations.  Systematic approach to ongoing classroom-based language assessment is done through Portfolio Based Language Assessment (PBLA) whereby learners collect evidence of their progress and accomplishments in relation to identified learning goals.  PBLA is referenced to the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB). 

​Academic and Test Preparation

The purpose of this course is to prepare learners for the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) and /or IELTS (International English Language Testing System), which evaluates the English proficiency of learners whose native language is not English. Focus of this Academic Course is structure, listening comprehension, academic reading, effective paragraph and essay writing, presentation skills note taking, and test taking skills and practice. 

ESL for Seniors

This course is an introduction to Speaking and Reading in the English language and life in Canada for Seniors. They will learn how to speak to people in stores, on the street, in the doctor’s office, at the bank, at school and at home. Learn new words and pronunciation in every lesson. Senior learners will be able to read signs, labels, store flyers, schedules, and more. Speaking and reading skills are based on Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB)

ESL with Computers

This course is designed for ESL learners who need computer basics for daily life, employment, and further study. Adult learners will be able to identify computer components, learn basic keyboarding, word processing, and internet skills. They will practice MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. During the course they will learn the essentials of good file management. In addition, they will learn how to look for a job on-line and prepare a job-winning resume. They will expand their presentation skills using Smart Board technology.

Health Literacy for ESL Learners (Part 1 & 2) 

This is an ideal course for English Language learners with an interest in developing health related language and gain essential knowledge of the medical system in order to pursue a career or additional training in a health related field. Language topics of study include; reading medical labels/hospital signs, healthy food and food pyramid, medical emergencies, medical screening and tests, health plans, risk assessment. Listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills are seamlessly integrated and aligned with CLB.

Learners will have the option to progress to Health Literacy for ESL Learners Part 2 when Benchmark level 4 is achieved.  

English Language Training for Citizenship

This course is intended to help learners prepare for citizenship and learn more about Canada and Ontario as they improve their English language skills. Topics include the values, culture, rights and responsibilities of citizenship, and can also help in preparing for the Citizenship Test. The Dufferin-Peel Program offers 12 sessions with a total of 36 hours of instruction. 

Literacy ESL for Beginners

This course is for learners who have had no or very little English instruction. The class will focus on the English alphabet, spelling, and basic grammar and sentence structure.  New material will be introduced in small steps, in accordance with learners’BMK level. Adult students will learn fundamentals of English and practice basic reading and writing as well as listening and speaking.
